Kochi Water Metro - An Overview

Servicing through the Greater Kochi region in Kerala, the Kochi Water Metro is a ferry transport service initiated by the Government of Kerala and the Kochi Metro System. Kochi Water Metro was launched on April 26, 2023, and is the first-ever water metro in India and the largest in Asia.

The first Kochi Water Metro route from Vyttila to Infopark Kochi was inaugurated by the Kerala Chief Minister, Pinarayi Vijayan in February 2021 and was further inaugurated and opened up for public service by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on April 25, 2023.

With an estimated commuter-count of 1.5 lakhs, the Water Metro in Kochi is expected to be fully functional by 2035 and when it is fully functional, the Kochi Water Metro will be connecting 10 island communities with the Eranakulam mainland in Kochi Urban City. The Water Metro in Kochi will be running a total distance of 78km servicing 78 fast hybrid electric ferries operating to a total of 38 boat jetties in Kochi.

The Water Metro in Kochi will be offering a pioneering ferry ride through the Kerala Backwaters, comprising parallel lakes to the Arabian Sea coast of Kerala and several brackish lagoons, such as - Vembanad Lake, Periyar and Muvattupuzha Rivers. With a draft characteristic of ensuring an environmental-friendly and energy-efficient safe boat ride through the low rides of Cochin backwaters, this one of the first water metro in India will sustainable urban water transport initiative in the city of Kochi, Kerala.

Kochi Water Metro - Stations & Route Map

The Kochi Water Metro will be having 2 phases and currently, phase 1 is partially operational with a total of 9 stations opened-up for the public of Kochi. The Kochi Water Metro Stations currently in service are:

  • High Court

  • Vyttila

  • Vypin

  • Kakkanad

  • Bolgatty

  • Fort Kochi

  • Mulavukad

  • South Chittoor

  • Cheranallur

  • Eloor

As part of Phase 1 of Water Metro in Kochi, currently, two routes are operational, one from High Court to Vypin and the other from Vyttila to Kakkanad. This route will be having 8 electric-hybrid boats in service. This hybrid water transport system in Kochi will facilitate boat jetties with an automated docking system having floating pontoons. The floating pontoons in the ferries will be having rectangle sheds covering them, that offer protection from the rain and hot sun.

Kochi Water Metro - Timings & Ticket Fare

The Vyttila-Kakkanad Water metro route will be having 3 ferry services in the morning(8 AM - 11:40 AM) and 3 in the afternoon(3:30 PM - 7:10 PM). The first ferry service from Vyttila Water Metro Station to Kakkanad Water Metro Station(Infopark Station) starts at 8 AM and the return will be scheduled at 8.40 AM. The ferry ride from Vittila to Kakkanad Water Metro Station will be covering a total of 5km. The ticket fare for the single journey of the Vyttila-Kakkanad Route will be coasting Rs 30/-. As per the latest scheduled time by the Kochi Water Metro, there will be a total of 27 trips in the Vyttitla-Kakkanad route in a day with additional trips conducted during the peak hours.

As for the High Court-Vipin water metro route, it is yet another operational Kochi Water Metro route, offering a convenient water ferry ride from the Kochi High Court to Vypin Island. Covering an approximated distance of 5.6km, that is operational from 7 AM to 8 PM with a ticket fare of Rs 20 for a single journey. Further operational water metro ride from Kochi High Court is to Bolgatty Water Metro Station and High Court to Fort Kochi Water Metro Station.

The Water Metro in Kochi is also offering weekly, monthly, and quarterly passes for the commuter. The ticket or pass for the ferry ride can be purchased from the water metro terminals or from the Kochi One app initiated by the Kochi Water Metro Limited(KWML).

As per the latest updates on the Kochi Water Metro, the first ever water metro in India, several new routes are been opened-up for the commuters, ensuring a safe ferry ride through the low tides of Kochi backwaters. Here are some of the latest news in 2024 regarding the water metro in Kochi, Kerala:

  • The much-anticipated service launched its first route connecting High Court and Fort Kochi in April 2024.

  • To meet growing demand, tenders for an additional 15 ferries were announced, bringing the total planned fleet to 23 ferries.

  • In March 2024, the Chief Minister virtually inaugurated 4 new terminals for Kochi Water Metro - South Chittoor, Cheranalloor, Mulavukad, and Eloor.
