What is a National park?

A particular natural environment or habitat of a specific set of flora (plants) and Fauna (animals) conserved by the Government is called a National Park.

But before we explore this list, understand that there are considerable differences between a wildlife sanctuary and a National Park.

According to the regulations, National Parks are heavily protected from human intervention, especially commercial or industrial activities, as they are ecological habitats that also often require special permissions to access, unlike wildlife sanctuaries.

1. Jim Corbett National Park

Jim Corbett National Park is the first and oldest National Park in India. Previously named after William Malcolm Hailey during the era of the British Raj, it was later named after Jim Corbett, who played a great role in establishing the same. The park is situated in Nainital, Uttarakhand.

It is famous for being the habitat of the Royal Bengal Tigers and was one of the first to come under Project Tiger. It is home to various species of flora like Sal, Peepal, etc., and Fauna like monitor lizards, Indian Elephants, black bears, leopards, and crescent serpent eagles, to mention a few.

2. Hemis National Park

Hemis National Park is known as the largest national park in India and is a high-altitude national park. The park is in Ladakh and is home to the famous snow leopard. The only national park north of the great Himalayas is also home to an amazing variety of plant species and animals like Tibetan wolf, red fox, Eurasian brown bear, Himalayan Marmot, black-winged snow finch, golden eagle, and firs.

3. Keibul Lamjao National Park

Located in Manipur, Keibul Lamjao National Park is the only floating park in the world. The park is home to the endangered Eld's Deer and is a swamp kind of region characterized by "phumdis," a floating decomposed biomass of plants. It also hosts other animals such as the Indian boar, large Indian civet, sambar deers, flying fox, Indian beauty rat snake, python, hooded crane, water hen, etc.

GHNP, as it is popularly known, is in Kullu, Himachal Pradesh. GHNP is situated within the junction of two of the world's ecozones, the Palearctic zone, and Indomalayan zone, and is known for the alpine meadows and dozens of special pines and spruce species. The major animal species are snow leopards, blue sheep, Himalayan brown bear, tahr, and musk deer.

Near the Tech Capital of India, Bangalore, Bannerghatta National Park is a famous tourist space as well as reputed eco habitats that house a rich collection of flora and Fauna. The major animals found in Bannerghatta National Park are Royal Bengal Tigers, Foxes, Sloth Bear, Langurs, blackbuck, barking deer, nilgai, kraits, loris, flamingoes, Indian wolves, etc. The plant species are as follows, Sandalwood, Neem, Eucalyptus, Terminalia elliptica, etc.

11. Desert National Park

The Desert National Park is one of the most diverse ecological biospheres of our nation and also can be considered one of our country's most proud eco heritage. Situated in Rajasthan, the National park is eponymous with the Thar Desert and the various flora and fauna of the region, including Dhok, ber, ronj, palm trees, and various subspecies of cacti. The Fauna mostly consists of Chinkara, Desert fox, Wolves, desert cats, and various bird types such as honey buzzards, Indian vultures, buzzards, falcons, and cranes.

Part of the Andaman Islands, the Marine National Park houses a varied ecosystem of marine, avian, reptile, and amphibian species. It is also one of the breeding regions of turtles and is a haven for aquatic animals, including dugongs, beach thick-knee birds, crab species, and fishes like mudskippers, humphead parrotfishes, etc.

Ranthambore National Park at Rajasthan is yet another major National Park in India. The ecosystem consists of green grasslands and dry deciduous thickets that house various plant and tree species as well as over 539 flowering plants species. Mukurthi National Park

Mukurthi National Park, in Tamil Nadu, is well-known for its stunning high-altitude grasslands and distinctive ecological features. This park, located in the Western Ghats, is a shelter for the Nilgiri tahr, a rare mountain goat native to the region. The park's geography consists of rocky hills, dense shola forests, and vast grasslands, resulting in a stunning and diversified environment. Mukurthi National Park is a part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, which is known for its rich biodiversity. Visitors can enjoy its panoramic beauty while viewing a diversity of flora and fauna, including numerous native species in their natural setting.
