Laying the foundation stones in 2018, Nitin Gadkari, the Union Transport Minister of India, inaugurated the construction of Thalassery Mahe Bypass. The project was first pitched long back in 1977. Due to several political reasons and land acquisition problems in the region, the construction work was delayed.

But after 47 years of waiting, the dream thoroughfare of Malabar got its green flag from the central and state governments and is on the verge of opening up to the citizens of Malabar.

The Thalassery-Mahe Bypass inauguration process will be conducted by Honr. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will conduct the ceremony via online source on March 11, 2024. The project, which is worth 1,543 crores, will be part of the National Highway 66(NH 66) and cover a total distance of 18.6km from the Darmadam town of Thalessery to the Chokli village of Kannur district.

The Thalassery-Mahe Bypass is a 6-lane bypass road on NH-66, connecting Muzhappilangad Madam stop in Kannur, near Thalassery, to Azhiyur in Kozhikode district, part of Greater Mahe. Yet another 6-lane thoroughfare project after Palakkad-Kozhikode Highway.

The Thalassery-Mahe Bypass route map serves the major regions in Kerala, such as Dharmadam, Thalassery, Thiruvangad, Eranholi, Kodiyeri, Mahe, and Chokli.

For a seamless toll payment experience, the bypass boasts a dedicated 1st Toll Plaza equipped with fast tag services at Kolassery. This ensures a smooth flow of traffic without any unnecessary delays.

Another prominent landmark is the Mahe-Palloor Road, the sole overbridge crossing the Thalassery-Mahe Bypass. Following this, you'll encounter the Peringadi Spinning Mill Road junction, the first on the bypass to be equipped with traffic signals. This area is witnessing a surge in real estate development, with the construction of hotels, restaurants, and various commercial establishments in full swing. Interestingly, with the inauguration of the Thalassery-Mahe Bypass, this junction will become the first signalized intersection in the entire district!
