The Indian government is scheduling to release a tracking system with functionalities to block and track your stolen or lost phones across the country.
The Centre for Department of Telematics: CDoT, is the app developing authority responsible for designing, developing, and implementing the CEIR system. The pilot of the Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR) System covers the telecommunication circles, including Maharashtra, Delhi, Karnataka, and the Northeast region, and the nearest system will be ready to cover PAN India. The CEIR system was launched in Pan India on May 17 2023. The system is designed to help people track their lost or stolen phones and even block them if required.
A built-In mechanism which tracks stolen phones, the system can help send a message to the nearest police station, track the cloned fake mobiles, block them, and restrict using cloned phones. The system thereby prevents them from falling prey to such fraudulent activities.
The CEIR system works across networks in turn, helps the government in preventing revenue losses to the exchequer. In contrast, the government has made it a mandate that the International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number a 15-digit unique numeric code identifier, Which must be disclosed before the sale of mobile devices in India.
Mobile phone networks can access the approved tracking IMEI numbers, which can be used for cross-verifying the unauthorised mobile phones on their network.
The CIER system will provide the device's IMEI number and phone number to telecom operators, which can be used to locate the lost or stolen device using CIER system.
A common practice for the perpetrators is to tamper with the IMEI numbers of stolen devices, which hamper the possibilities of tracking and blocking such devices.
Nevertheless, the CEIR system can prevent fake cloned mobile devices from being used on the network with the help of several databases.
The Karnataka Police was able to track 2,500 lost mobile phones to their respective lost owners using the CEIR system. Apple uses "Apple ID" to track devices, an enterprising tracking system. In contrast, Android lacks an effective tracking system and has many issues on the device tracking front. The CEIR system can be an alternative to track stolen or lost mobiles.
