07, March 2026

Bangalore, AKA India's Garden City, has experienced massive population growth in recent years. This increase had an effect on the city's infrastructure, particularly its transportation system. Welcome the Namma Metro's pink line, a major project aimed at reducing traffic congestion and providing a faster, more comfortable form of transportation.

The Namma Metro currently operates two lines: the Green and Purple Lines. However, the projected Pink Line makes the future look more brighter. The most expected line, which is now under construction, has the potential to alter Bangalore's transport environment.

Here's a quick overview of everything you should know:

Latest Namma Metro Pink Line Update

Tunnelling Nearly Complete: The underground segment, a great engineering, is almost finished! Over 95% of the tunnelling is completed, with BMRCL aiming for full completion by August 2024.

Overall completion in 2025: While the entire line is projected to be operating by 2025, there may be some good news coming soon. Some sources claim that segments of the line, probably from Kalena Agrahara to Nagawara, might open as early as August 2024.

Construction of Namma Metro Pink Line Underground Section

The underground section of the Namma Metro Pink Line in Bangalore is nearly finished and removed around 252 trees underground section completion. Here's a breakdown of progress:

  • Total Length: The underground section is 13.76 kilometers long, and it is part of the entire 21.26 kilometer Pink Line.

  • Construction Method: Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) were used to build the tunnels. Nine TBMs were involved in total, seven of which completed their tasks .

  • Stations: The underground portion includes a structure of 12 underground stations. Overall, the Pink Line will include 18 stops (12 underground and 6 elevated) .

Namma Metro Pink Line Tendering

The Pink Line's cost was expected to be high due to its extensive underground section and tunneling in difficult geology. In March 2017, the estimated total cost of the line was ₹11,014 crore (US$1.4 billion), making it the most costly line in Phase ll. BMRC first issued tenders for the construction of the 13.9 km (8.6 mi) underground section in four packages in June 2017. However, all bids received were too high (nearly 70% higher).

On March 26, 2018, BMRC cancelled all tenders for the underground section due to excessively high bids. There was speculation of collusion because the bids were comparable and each bidder quoted the lowest for one package, thus all four might get to be awarded one package each.

The second round of tendering generated bids that were closer to BMRC predictions, and three companies were granted contracts between February and November 2019. One of the companies (L&T) won two bids. The total awarded tunneling tenders for the underground sections were ₹5,925.95 crores (about US$812 million).

Namma Metro Pink Line Funding

BMRC received in-principle approval from the European Investment Bank (EIB) to fund the construction of the Kalena Agrahara-Nagawara line through a loan of ₹3,700 crore (US$460 million) in May 2017. The BMRC obtained an agreement with the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) to receive a soft loan of ₹2,255.14 crore (US$280 million) on June 4, 2019, repaid over a 25-year period. The Central and State governments are also funding the line.

The Namma Metro Pink Line is evidence of Bangalore's dedication to development and advancement. Residents of Bangalore may anticipate a more effective, practical, and ecologically responsible method to travel around their beloved city as the project comes to completion.
