Thillai Nataraja Temple at Chidambaram houses the Akasa lingam or Ether lingam, which denotes an element of space among the Pancha Bhoota Sthalams. It is also said that during the Chola reign, Shiva appeared in the form of Nataraja and performed Ananda Thandava. During Maha Shivratri, the temple holds the annual Natyanjali dance festival.
