Chennai - Trichy Expressway, the first and proposed greenfield expressway between Chennai and Tiruchirapalli has got its green flag for commencing its construction. The commutation between Chennai and Tiruchirapalli has now become more hassle-free and smooth.

Envisioned under the Bharatmala Project, the Chennai-Trichy Greenfield Expressway will bring improved travel convenience thereby transforming the whole connectivity network of Tamil Nadu state of South India.

Proposed by the National Highways Authority of India(NHAI), the Chennai Trichy Highway will provide more efficient and faster route from Chennai to Tiruchirapalli, an alternative to transit through the existing NH 45. The total length of the expressway is expected to be around 310 kilometers.

Chennai-Trichy Highway - An Overview

The journey from Chennai to Tiruchirapalli have now become more faster and efficient!

Introducing the Chennai - Trichy Expressway, the second greenfield corridor in Tamil Nadu, after the Chennai-Salem Expressway. Located between Chennai and Tiruchirapalli, this greenfield corridor in Tamil Nadu runs approximately 310km, starting from Chennai and terminating in Trichy, passing through various districts in Tamil Nadu. It is designed to provide a high-speed, uninterrupted corridor for vehicular traffic.

With its completion, the current 6-hour travel from Chennai to Trichy will only require 4-hour ride through its fast and efficient elevated road. The Chennai-Trichy Highway will go in line with the Chennai-Selam Expressway, the first greenfield corridor in Tamil Nadu. The existing 4-lane road will be expanded to an 8-lane elevated road interconnecting it to the NH-45 highway as part of the Bharatmala Project.

Reducing the current 6-hour travel time from Chennai to Trichy, the Chennai-Trichy Greenfield Expressway is designed to connect the major districts in Tamil Nadu. The Chennai Trichy Highway route map will intersect other existing highways and major roads in Tamil Nadu, ensuring a seamless connectivity to various regions of this South Indian state.

Starting from the bustling Chennai city, the other major cities/towns that the Chennai Trichy Highway passes by are Chengalpattu, Tindivanam, Villupuram, and Perambalur, and the endpoint at Trichy AKA Tiruchirappalli, an historically, culturally and economically significant city in Tamil Nadu.

Being part of the expanding Bharatmala Project, the Chennai Trichy Expressway route map is further connected to other proposed and existing highways under the project. The highway will further connect to the major cities of Tamil Nadu, including Thanjavur, Pillaiyarpatti(Sivaganga), and Tuticorin, each connected with 3-different projects under the Bharatmala Project.

A spur route, a bypass connecting Trichy to Thanjavur is proposed after the Chennai-Trichy Highway. Further, a 4-lane highway connecting, Thanjavur to Pillaiyarpatti. Finally, a 160km expressway from Pillaiyarpatti, ending at Tuticorin, generates a proposed corridor in the way.

Chennai-Trichy Highway - Land Acquisition & Construction

The Chennai-Trichy Highway is undergoing significant upgrades, with major projects focused on land acquisition and construction to enhance connectivity.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) plans to upgrade the existing highway, which includes land acquisition for expanding it to an eight-lane road, reducing travel time from six to four hours.

Currently, the highway linking these cities consists of four lanes, but the NHAI is contemplating expanding it to eight lanes by acquiring adjacent lands. Additionally, plans are underway for a smaller expressway between Pillayarpatti and Thoothukudi, totaling 160 kilometers. Together, these projects will result in a 470-kilometer network of expressways for Tamil Nadu.

This greenfield project passes through several rural areas in Tamil Nadu, reducing the cost of land acquisition for the Chennai Trichy Expressway. As per the latest report from the NHAI, the estimated cost of the project is around 35,000 Cr and it will cover a total distance of 310km from Chennai to Trichy.
