Kochi Metro Remarkable Revolution in Kochi Cityscape

Metro is the most buzzing word among people living in the metropolitan cities. Kochi is no exception.

Kochi Metro System is The Most Advanced Metro System in Bharat. With its sustainable developments, it is expected to improve the living standards of the city.

Metro with its objective to pioneer the "command and control" system in managing the public transport systems, including the metro, the boats, buses, the auto-rickshaws, and taxies- to work together as a seamlessly integrated system with a centralised system -with common ticketing and timetable.

Kochi Metro System has made it to the media headlines of all major dailies. A well-connected metro system is what people expect as an alternative to the current public transportation systems.

Together with the colaboration of Kochi Water Metro Limited(KWML) and the Kerala Government, Kochi Metro Rail Limited(KMRL) has introduced an urban water transit initiative, the Kochi Water Metro, the first water metro in India which will connect 10 island communities with the Kochi Urban City of Ernakulam, Kerala.

Road transportation in Kochi with heavy traffic and the travelling distance invariably increases the travel time from locations A to B. With Kochi-Metro the most advanced transportation system certainly reduces the travel time of people who opt to travel in Metro, moreover with ease.

Thus we can safely say Kochi Metro System has forever changed the cityscape of Kochi & Ernakulam.

Social Inclusion

Kochi Metro

A unique aspect of Kochi Metro is the inclusion of members of Kudumbashree - a women empowerment-oriented, community-based, poverty-eradication, self-help community project by the Kerala Government - for maintaining the operations and management of the Kochi-Metrod Stations.

Kudumashree provides numerous services from customer relations, housekeeping, crowd management, and catering services. Kochi Metro System is the largest women empowerment organisation among other city's metro.

KMRL along the sides of Kudumbashree, has also provided equal opportunity to all genders, for instance: employing a person from the LGBT community in its operations shows its unbiased system, and also flows policies against gender discrimination, laid down by the Kerala Government.

Design

Egis India was given the responsibility for designing the Kochi metro stations: such as the floors and doors. The Indian Institute of Architecture - Kochi, designed and developed the roof and the interior of the Kochi metro stations. The IIA produced designs of 14 stations for the KMRL.

The decoration for the interiors and exteriors of Kochi Metro stations is based on the local culture. However, the traditional Nalukettu architectural style was not feasible. According to KMRL - the stations will be decorated in ways that it can reflect the Kerala Style of architecture, across 22 stations following the Kerala Theme to give it distinctive looks.

The Kettuvalam or houseboat - are popularly used in the backwaters of the state, is the theme of one of the metro stations, describing how it is made with an original model alongside.

The Western Ghats that run across the Kerala-Tamil Nadu borders form a common design theme of the Kochi Metro stations. Aluva Sation's theme is the Kerala state's natural beauty and the station's interiors follow the Periyar and the other major rivers in the Kerala state.

The walls of the Pulinchodu station's are decorated with the flora and fauna of the Western Ghats. Kalamassery station shows spices of the mountain range.

The theme of CUSAT station is maritime history, and that of Pathadipalam station is based on the fish of the western ghats. The theme of the Edapally station is the cultural and artistic heritage of Kerala. Palarivattom station depicts the heritage of sports in Kerala.

The monsoon season forms the theme of the Kaloor station. Endangered species, animals and birds of the Western Ghats form the theme of the Maharaja's College Station.

Stations were designed to provide the maximum natural light and ventilation, especially in the passenger areas. As an energy conservation initiative, the station uses LED lights and has water-efficient fittings in the toilets to reduce water consumption.

A few stations also include rainwater harvesting. A three-second tune composition using chend and ilathalam is played when the doors of the train open or close at the stations. KMRL chose to play the chanda tune instead of the typical chime played on other metro stations, adding Kerala's flavour to Metro Station.
