Given the large number of people crammed into a single city, it's no surprise that the culinary offerings are vast, with spices, flavors, and price points ranging from low to high. As a result, first-time visitors to India who have limited time in one of the world's most food-focused cities may find the variety of things to eat in Delhi overwhelming.
Many western visitors to Delhi spend their time checking out the best restaurants. Sure, there are pricey restaurants like Indian Accent, Varq, and Tian, but some of the best Dehli food, in our opinion, can be found on the street.
Old Delhi street food not only captures the authentic spirit of Indian cuisine, but it's also a bargain for our frugal diners. Yes, the best cheap cuisine in Delhi can be found in the same places where locals eat street food.
These Old Delhi restaurants are heaven for non-vegetarians and chaat lovers:
Old Delhi, also known as Purani Dilli, is India's capital city's cultural and historical heart. Aside from its historic architecture and the famous Chandni Chowk market, the district is also known for its small bylanes lined with world-famous eateries that are a meat-dream! These restaurants are a must-see if you enjoy delectable cuisine.
You've probably heard of Karim's if you eat meat! Tucked away in the small lanes of Purani Dilli, this years-old café is arguably one of the city's most notable gastronomic destinations. Karim's is the place to go if you want to try authentic royal Mughlai cuisine. While you're here, don't forget to try their mutton Burra, Qorma, Mughlai chicken, and Mutton nihari.
Al Jawahar restaurant, right next to Karim's, is another excellent choice for traditional Mughlai cuisine in Old Delhi. This small restaurant serves delectable Mutton biryani, Qorma, and Kebabs. There is not a single dish on the whole menu that will let you down.
This small restaurant is well-known for serving some of the best mutton biryani in town. Non-vegetarians who rave about the restaurant's Moradabadi biryani have a soft spot in their hearts. The meat is served in large portions with fragrant rice, green chutney, and raw onions. Try their aromatic sweet dessert "phirni" after you've finished the biryani.
If you like your food hot and spicy, this is the place to go. Changezi Chicken has a cult following, and the restaurant is always busy at all hours of the day. The restaurant now takes up an entire side street and is still expanding. You won't need to ask for directions because the crowd will direct you!
This one has been in existence for well over a quarter-century. This small restaurant became well-known for its unusual butter chicken recipe. People are queuing for their chicken entrees. The chicken is bathed in butter after being roasted in a tandoor. When the chicken is done, it is rubbed all over with a generous amount of butter! The dish is then served with fresh and hot rumali roti.
You can't go wrong with kulfi from these Sitaram Bazaar sweet shops. These creamy concoctions are at their best here. One of the oldest stores, Lala Duli Chand Naresh Gupta, is known for its fruit-flavored kulfis, particularly the seasonal mango kulfi. These restaurants also offer a fresh take on flavor combinations like tamarind, rose, aam papad, and kewda.
They can be purchased in Dariba, Kinari Bazaar, and Daryaganj, among other locations. 'Daulat ki Chaat,' a frothy, creamy dessert, is sold there. It is made from sour milk that has been churned. The silky, cottony foam is carefully collected and served. It's made with khoya and saffron and instantly melts in your mouth. One of the most delectable treats takes approximately six hours to prepare! It's made the night before and served hot in the morning.
This town's cholas are the best. For those who enjoy it, this is as spicy as it gets. The Cholas, which have been sold on the streets since 1977, are topped with coriander and green chilies and served with potatoes in a fiery red stew. This small restaurant is always buzzing with activity. At Barsha Bullah Chowk, ask for Lotan; almost everyone knows who he is. He is most commonly found in Chhatta Shah Ji.
The term 'khurchan' refers to leftover scraps. This one-of-a-kind dessert is made entirely of milk. Khurchan is simple to make sticky desserts. Bring the milk to a boil, then scrape out the karahi remnants and top with powdered sugar and pistachios. When you bite into the soft, gooey texture, you'll be in ecstasy. Gauri Shankar Jain, an immigrant from Uttar Pradesh, established this small business nearly 90 years ago. His son, Hazari Lal, was the inspiration for the shop's name.
Qureshi Kebab Corner, one of the most popular street food outlets in Old Delhi, serves juicy, tender, and savory kebabs. Qureshi Kebab Corner was founded by Haji Abdul Ghani Qureshi in memory of his grandfather, who used to sell kebabs from a kiosk near Jama Masjid. The restaurant is now run by five of the founder's sons, who strictly adhere to their father's recipe. Because the venue is always crowded, you may have to wait a while to enjoy the small treats.
Must-Try Dishes: Chicken tikka, Chicken Malai tikka, Seekh kebab.
The entire road in Chandni Chowk, known as Paranthe Wali Gali, provides several stuffed parathas. From aloo to gobhi, chili, cheese, keema, egg, paneer, and mooli, joints after joints, jammed in the walls like a closet, sell mouth-watering parathas loaded with every possible concoction you can think of. Pandit Gaya Prasad Paranthe Wala is the oldest of the stores, which was opened in 1870 under the Mughal Empire.
Dishes You Must Try: Aloo Paratha, Paneer Paratha, and Chilly Paratha.
