Dhanushkodi is located in the southeastern tip of Pamban island of Tamil Nadu state in India. It was an abandoned town after the 1964 Dhanushkodi-Rameswaram Cyclone; the after-effects of the cyclone, Dhanushkodi, became uninhabitable.

Transportation to Dhanushkodi

The National Highway was completed stretching over 9.5 km. Mukuntharaya Chathiram is 5 km to Dhanushkois and 4.5 km from Arichamunai to Dhanushkodi.

Until 2016, People either hired jeeps or walked the seashore to reach Dhanushkodi. In 2016, a highway-road was completed from the Mukundarayar Chathiram village. A meter gauge train ran between Dhanushkodi and Mandapam in Mainland India, which was destroyed in the 1964 Dhanushkodi Cyclone.

In 2003, Southern Railways sent a project report to the Ministry of Railways for relaying a 16 km railway line from Dhanushkodi to Rameshwaram. The railway planning commission analysed the possibilities of a new railway line between Rameswaram and Dhanushkodi in 2010.

Mythological Significance

Dhanushkodi's name comes from the combination of two words Dhanush - Rama's Bows and Kodi to End (Ravanna)

Dhanushkodi is a mythological famous across the world. In the mythology Ramayana, Dhanushkodi's bridge or "Rama Sethu" between Sri Lanka and Dhanushkodi.

It is believed that Rama and his army force with Hanuman built the bridge to walk into Sri Lanka to free Sita from Ravanna's abduction and who had hide her in Sri Lanka. So people worldwide who follow the Ramayana are bound to recognize the significance of Dhanushkodi.
