A Simple Guide to Downsizing & Decluttering your Home

07, January 2026

Cleaning out your home can be a tedious and tiring process,

especially if you are a curator of all those small and wonderous props for decorating your home.

The case is the same with serial shoppers, too (yeah, we know the pain too well!)

However, minimizing clutter is a must for every home; after all, cleanliness is next to godliness (Didn't you feel a pang of nostalgia accompanied by an image of Adarsh Balak? Us too)

Steps to Downsize your home

1. Start Simple, Pick a Room

The best and proven way to begin is by picking one room and sticking with it till the end. Yes, multitasking sounds much better, but clearing off one mess at a time is easier.

Once that's done, move on to another one. If after a particular time you find that you've still not been able to manage all the rooms, go back and clean up those again!

Get what we mean? Start from where you are now.

2. Go for Clothes first

Yes, just as in our cover image, next comes clothes!

Start collecting clothes from your cupboards and wardrobe and ask yourself questions like,

Do I actually wear these clothes, or am I too lazy to put them away?

This will help you eliminate all the clothes you don't need anymore. If something fits and looks good on you, even if it doesn't flatter you, then just chances are that we might have shrunk that pair of jeans/dress, or maybe it was a one-time thing after all!

If you find all these clothes and are still in good condition, you can always donate them to charity.

3. Keep only important things

We will talk more about these in the upcoming section, but keep only important things, like phones, laptops, kindles, and everything you need every day.

If you're thinking, "But wait, who says I can't have my BFF's old pair of jeans that she gave me as a gift?" then just hold on for a second and answer this:

Do I wear it? Do I feel comfortable in it? Is it made out of good fabric? Is it trendy now, or was the trend set before I even bought this thing?

Yeah, sounds hard, right?

So, what's the easy way to do it?

That's what we are here for, right? Here are some simple steps for downsizing and decluttering your home

What is Downsizing?

Getting rid of many possessions is a very common occurrence for those among us who used to live in bigger homes moving to smaller ones.

Simple Tips for effective Downsizing and Decluttering your home

1. Plan it Out

We know that's why you are here, but just hear us out.

First, have a detailed idea about the new place you are moving into. If it has a storage system of its own, then try to figure out how much of your redundant accessories or furniture you can fit into it.

Then comes the rest, which you want to display in your living space and bedrooms.

Make sure that each of the furniture has its own place and is not over crowded.

2. Make Hard Decisions

Yes, now it's time for some necessary sacrifices.

That old pair of jeans or the worn out dream catcher you thought was cool back during college days? THINK TWICE before you keep them. '

Yes, these do have sentimental and nostalgic value, but if you do not have the luxury of space, then all the more likely, you should get rid of it. You can always sell it on resale sites and get a good price.

Or else nowadays you can always rent out a storage space of your own. So, there's no need to bid bye for good!

Try to sort other items out on a need & want basis. And if you are hell-bent on keeping some of these or are completely unsure, you can even make up boxes titled yes, no and maybe.

3. Bring in Some Creative Solutions

No doubt, many of these will bring back very old memories. But do stay strong or bring in some simple solutions. For example, many old photographs can be digitized, whereas old pairs of jeans can be made and used to create many artworks or crafts.

So, folks, that's pretty much about decluttering and downsizing your home.
