Let's talk about one of Modern India's most ambitious projects, Mumbai Trans Harbour Link, India's Largest Sea Bridge.
The sea link bridge which connects India's Financial Capital Mumbai to its satellite city Navi Mumbai and is in its final stages. The Mumbai Trans Harbour Link will cover a total of 21.8 km and the total cost of the heavy-weight project is around a whopping Rs 18000 crores.
Planned over 30 years ago, the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link is aimed to decongest the notorious Mumbai traffic. There will be a total of 6 lanes. After construction, the travel time between the mainland and Mumbai will be just 30 minutes, and after the toll gate, the commuters can travel at a speed of 100km/hr.
Mumbai is connected to the mainland via two major networks the Vashi Bridge and the Airoli bridge. However as the population of the metropolitan city is increasing, these two bridges were found to be inadequate to handle the huge number of commuters, who often choose to stay in the mainland satellite city far from the city center due to the traffic and housing prices.
The Mumbai Trans Harbour Link or MTHL will be officially known as Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Trans Harbour Link. The sea link bridge will also be known as Sewri–Nhava Sheva Trans Harbour Link as it connects Sewri with Nhava Sheva.
The tender for the construction of the bridge was awarded to Larsen & Turbo, IHI, Tata Projects, and Daewoo. The project's 1 &3 packages were bagged by L&T and were a joint bid with IHI. Package 2 was awarded to Tata Projects which was in a joint bid with Daewoo.
The bridge will have 148 steel decks, and 4 km around the middle part will have spans at the height of 110 meters, for enabling the ships to travel easily through the sea routes. MMRDA or Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority manages the construction. Around 270 pillars were erected and 177 of these will be in the sea. This is also the first project in India to use the Automatic Grider Launcher system.
There were multiple complications during the construction, the major one being the Covid pandemic which extended the timeline of completion. The second was the objection from the local fishing communities, who would loose their livelihood due to the construction. The MMRDA has solved the same by providing them with adequate measures to safegaurd their lives till the construction is over. The third complication was due to the pollution to the environment as the debris and sound can cause to the ecological system. The authorities had to cut down 455 trees for the construction of the same, but promised to plant another 500 to make for these and also an additional 2000 will also be planted in the city for the same.
The temporary sea bridge of 5.6 km made along with the main one which aided in the construction will not be demolished but rather converted into a bird watching platform for enthusiasts. The region is home to flamingoes and many migratory as well as sea birds.
As mentioned earlier, the Mumbai trans harbour link will start from Sewri in Mumbai, entering into the Eastern Freeway, passing Trombay, and entering into Navi Mumbai from Ulwe. It will pass the Kharkopar station into NH 348. It will connect to the future Navi Mumbai Coastal Highway, which will further connect through the proposed Special Economic Zone and Navi Mumbai's New International Airport. The trucks can easily travel to Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNPT) and there is a proposed extension to Karnala Bird Sanctuary traversing to Mumbai Pune Expressway.
In Mumbai, it connects to the Worli - Sewri, and from there, it connects to Prabhadevi Railway Station and ends in Worli - Bandra Sea Link and the Mumbai Coastal Road.
So guys that's all about the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link or Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Trans Harbour Link.
