Rishi Sunak has been in the news all week for both being the first Indian-origin PM of the UK and also the 5th UK prime minister in 6 years.

Rishi Sunak - Early Life and Education

Rishi Sunak was born to parents of Indian descent on 12th May 1980. He was the eldest of three children born to Yashvir and Usha Sunak. He did his schooling at Stroud School and Winchester College. During his summer holidays, he part-timed as a waiter in a curry house.

He graduated from Lincoln College, Oxford, in 2001 and also interned at the Conservative Party's campaign headquarters. A Fulbright Scholar, Sunak did his MBA at Stanford University.

He started his career as an analyst for Goldman Sachs and then in the Children's Investment Fund Management, a hedge fund, eventually making a partner in 2006. After this, he moved to Theleme Partners and was also a director at Catamaran Ventures.

Another interesting fact about Rishi Sunak is that he is married to Akshata Murthy, who is the daughter of Narayan Murthy, the founder of Infosys, and Sudha Murthy, the reputed educator and author.

Rishi Sunak - Political Career

The political career of Rishi Sunak started in 2014 after he contested from the Conservative Party's stronghold Richmond. He became an MP In the 2015 general election & served as a member of the 'Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs' Committee.

He was a supporter of the iconic Brexit movement. He won again with an increased majority in the 2016 General Election and was the parliamentary under-secretary for local government from 2018 to 2019. In 2019, he supported Boris Johnson in the Conservative Party Leadership Election and also was re-elected again with an increased majority.

After many other stints, such as G7 tax reform and a proposal for a green levy, Sunak had to receive flak from the opposition party leader Keir Strammer stated that Sunak was unaware of the hardships of the common folk amidst the cost of living crisis.

Followed by the Chris Pincher controversy, Sunak and many major leaders of the cabinet submitted their resignations.

Following the resignation of Boris Johnson, Sunak stood in the election to replace him as the leader. He and Liz Truss were the final contenders for the same. However, Liz Truss was elected and took charge as the PM of the UK.

However, due to the "Mini Budget" initiative and the widespread backlashes it received across the nation (due to the fall of the pound's value), Liz Truss resigned just after 50 days.

This paved the way for Rishi Sunak's unopposed leadership. He assumed the position on 24th October 2022.
