The Kanpur metro now covers 8.98 kilometers and has 9 elevated stations.

It is constructed and operated by the Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC). Its first portion, the Orange Line, was inaugurated on December 28, 2021, and opened to the public.

Progress of the Kanpur Metro project:

2015 September: Kanpur Metro Rail Corporation is formed.

2016 March: Uttar Pradesh government approves phase-1 DPR.

2017 July: Civil work starts for phase 1 and in September Centre seeks changes in the DPR.

2018 March: Uttar Pradesh cabinet approves Kanpur Metro project and June Finance Ministry gives in-principle approval to the Kanpur Metro.

2019 February: Uttar Pradesh allocates Rs 175 crores in its budget, to start preliminary work; Centre approves Kanpur Metro project.

On September Afcons Infra awarded the tender to construct nine stations along with tracks and elevated viaduct.

2020 February: CM Yogi Adityanath allocates Rs 358 crores towards Kanpur Metro phase-1.

On September EIB to invest 650 million euros for the project.

2021 February: Uttar Pradesh budget 2021-22 allocates Rs 597 crores for the Kanpur Metro rail project.

On May Initial work starts for the 8.621-km underground section of Kanpur Metro.

Kanpur Metro Phases & Their Specifics:

Phase 1: IIT Kanpur to Naubasta

Length: 23.8 km (Approx.)

Details:

Route: IIT Kanpur – Kalyanpur – Rawatpur – LLR Hospital – Moti Jheel – Bada Chauraha – Nayaganj – Jhakarkati Bus Station – Transport Nagar – Barra – Naubasta.

Stations: 22 stations.

Status: Partially operational. The priority corridor connecting IIT Kanpur and Moti Jheel was the first to become operational in December 2021.

Key Areas Covered: This phase connects the educational core of IIT Kanpur to heavily populated residential and commercial neighborhoods, such as Moti Jheel and Bada Chauraha, Kanpur's two major commercial centers. It finishes in Naubasta, a remote neighborhood notable for its residential colonies.

Phase 2: Chandra Shekhar Azad University to Jaurali

Length: 8.6 km (Approx.)

Details:

Route: Chandra Shekhar Azad University – Govind Nagar – Vijay Nagar – Kidwai Nagar – Jaurali.

Stations: 8 stations.

Status: Planned.

Key Areas Covered: This phase primarily serves Kanpur's southern region, linking educational institutions like as Chandra Shekhar Azad University to residential neighborhoods like Kidwai Nagar and Jaurali. It intends to minimize traffic congestion in these areas and improve connectivity to industrial zones.

Phase 3: Naubasta to Barra 8

Length: 5.5 km (Approx.)

Details:

Route: Naubasta – Barra 8.

Stations: 4 stations.

Status: Planned.

Key Areas Covered: This phase, which extends further into the southern suburbs, intends to cater to Barra's developing residential regions while also offering a direct access to the rest of the city via the current metro network.

Phase 4: Gurudev Chauraha to Mandhana

Length: 13 km (Approx.)

Details:

Route: Gurudev Chauraha – Vikas Nagar – Lakhanpur – Bithoor – Mandhana.

Stations: 10 stations.

Status: Planned.

Key Areas Covered: This phase connects Kanpur's northern areas, bringing the commercial sectors around Gurudev Chauraha to the historically significant region of Bithoor and the residential sections around Mandhana. It also intends to benefit the educational institutions in the Lakhanpur area.

Inauguration of Kanpur Metro:

The Orange Line, which commenced operations in December 2021, covers a distance of nine kilometers from IIT-Kanpur to Motijheel. This stretch of the Kanpur Metro is considered the priority corridor as it connects various significant landmarks in the city.

It should be noted that Noida, Ghaziabad, and Lucknow are some of the cities in Uttar Pradesh that have a functioning metro system.

Kanpur Metro Timings:

The First Train in the Kanpur Metro starts at 06:00 AM and the last train starts at 10:00 PM from both ends of operational stations.

Kanpur Metro runs every 5 minutes, allowing you to take the train when it is convenient for you.

If you take the train from Kanpur Metro Station, it will take you 4 minutes to reach Vishwavidyalaya Metro Station, 10 minutes to Geeta Nagar Metro Station, and 13 minutes to LLR Metro Station.
