All about Vande Bharath Express

31, December 2025

There's no doubt that Vande Bharath has revolutionized Indian Railways.

The swift trains of Vande Bharath are often compared to the bullet trains of Japan and have got the attention of the whole nation.

Known earlier as Train 18 was renamed Vande Bharath Express in 2019. Vande Bharath is a speed electric multiple-unit train and was manufactured in Chennai's own Integral Coach Factory.

Now let's move in on the details,

Vande Bharath Express - An Overview

Vande Bharath is India's first answer to high speed railway networks.

Indian Railways has always been the rock of long-distance transport right from Colonial times. It took a rather long time to evolve compared to the other rail networks of the world, mainly due to its safety and cost concerns. The railways aimed to increase the existing speeds from 85 km per hour to 150 km per hour, and it was in mid-2010; with the Gatimaan Express, it achieved a speed of 99 km per hour. Most of the trains that run now have similar speeds.

Vande Bharath Express thus becomes the face of a new phase of Indian Railways.

The plans for the indigenous trains were brought in early 2015, but it was in 2017 the plans were actualized. Code named Train 2018 was completed in October of 2018 and was supposed to replace the Shatabdi Express.

Speed of Vande Bharath

Vande Bharath currently runs at 130 km per hour and upto 160 km per hour in commercial runs (granted the infrastructure allows the speeds). The tested speed of Vande Bharath reached upto an amazing 180 km per hour and has the potential to reach 200 km per hour (120 mph). Despite these impressive speeds, Vande Bharat is not listed among the world's fastest trains because there are other trains around the world capable of reaching speeds of up to 460 km per hour.

Vande Bharath Expressway - Changes from Traditional Railways?

Apart from the speeds, there are a lot of changes have been made to the Vande Bharath Express. The design itself is different from the traditional trains, both exterior and interior. The exteriors are crafted in a more aerodynamic form to reduce air resistance. There are two major versions of Vande Bharath titled VB 1 and VB 2. VB3 and VB4 are in development presently and will be brought under the Train 20 program. Both these versions (VB1 and VB2) are an upgrade from the traditional one, especially since the interiors are made with equipment and furnishings that are of international standards.

The lighting, the rotational chairs, the doors, bio vacuum toilets, everything is set apart from the age old style of the railways, which we have grown up familiar with. The coaches and cars are designed to optimize the acceleration and braking of the trains, which also additionally helps in noise reduction.

The VB2 version is an upgrade to the VB1 as it has automatic sliding and plug doors, push-back reclinable seats, etc. VB2 is also equipped with the indigenously developed Kavach protection system, along with other safety measures, including emergency doors, disaster lights, air ventilation with 3 hours of back up, etc.

VB3 will be deployed for longer routes and will have sleeper coaches with a total life of 35 years. VB3 is also said to be lighter than the existing Vande Bharath series. VB4, on the other hand, will be the 4th generation model from the series and will provide features such as 3 pin/USB sockets for each passenger, zero discharge toilets, etc. They can reach speeds upto 200 km per hour and are expected to be tilting trains.
