What is a Pin Code ?

A Postal Index Code or Pin code in general is the 6 digit Indian postal numbering system that identifies the zone, district and state.

Introduced back in 15th August 1972 for the ease of identifying the regions and bringing down the number of errors in delivering the posts. The 6 digits of of Pin code signifies the zone, the subzone, sorting district and postal office. There are a total of nine postal zones in India, where the first eight are geographical ones and the last is solely for the Army. This means that multiple areas can come under the same pin codes if they come under the same post office. Pin code thus becomes a very important part of the address of your home, permanent or temporary. Even as the country's postal department is facing a decline, the pin code system is still used by the government and private institutions as identifiers in general for address proofs and the delivery of couriers. India has over 1,55,000 postal branches across.
