Kukkesubramanya is a holy temple located in the beautiful Western Ghats of the Indian state of Karnataka. Dedicated to Lord Subramanya, popularly known as Kartikeya, this ancient temple is of great importance to Hindus.

The history of Kukke Subramanya temple is a mixture of legends and myths. According to a belief, Lord Subramanya, who emerged victorious after defeating the demons, reached Kumara Parvata along with his brother Ganesha. There he married Indra's daughter Devasena in a grand ceremony attended by the gods.

Another legend surrounds the celestial serpent Vasuki. Vasuji took the protection of Lord Subramanya in Kuksubramanya to escape from Garuda's protection. This connection makes this temple revered for appeasing the snake god and seeking deliverance from Naga Doshas (curses related to snakes).

This temple is also considered one of the seven holy places found by saint Parashurama. Its priests follow Madhvacharya rituals and the temple is still a famous pilgrimage site.

Kukkesubramanya Temple Timings and Sevas:

The temple is open from 6am to 8pm every day, with several worship ceremonies taking place throughout the day.

1) Sarpa Samaskara Pooja: Killing a snake causes Naga Dosham to the person and also to the family/generation of the person. Sarpa Samaskara pooja is done to get rid of Naga Dosha in Kukke over a period of Two Days. Nagaprathishta is also included in Sarpa Samaskara Pooja. The seva fees is Rs 3000.

2) Aslesha Bali: It gives good results when performed in Aslesha/Ayilyam Star days. Homa sankalpa is included. It is done in two shifts namely 7:00 am and 9:00 am. The Seva Fee for the same is Rs 400 and is available on all days except Ekadasi and fast days.

3) Nagaprathishta: The Naga Prathishta includes participation in Naga Prathishta homa. There is also a Naga Prathishta Mandapa in the Temple. The Seva Fee for the same is Rs 400 and is available on all days except Ekadasi and fast days.

4) Prarthana: For Employment related issues, Santana prapthi/begetting Children, relief from chronic skin diseases, marriage related issues etc. Prathana is done daily at Sri Subrahmanya Sannidhi 12:00 pm and 7:30 pm respectively. The Seva Fee for the same is Rs 100.

How to reach Kukkesubramanya Temple

By Car: Kukke Subramanya Temple is about 270 kilometers away from Bangalore, and the trip takes about 6 hours. Mangalore is the closest, and is located about 105 km from Kukke Subramanya Temple. you can go to the temple via car or taxi.

By Train: From Bangalore to Subramanya there are 2 trains available everyday. By rail, the trip takes seven or eight hours. The Subramanya Railway Station is closest to Kukke Subramanya Temple, approximately 7 kilometers away. From the train station, you can go to the temple by bike or by cab.

By Bus: From Bangalore, the bus ride takes about 6 to 7 hours. Many bus connections are available from major towns like Bangalore and Mangalore to Kukke Subramanya.

It is said that you should see Dharmastala, the father, first, and next his son in Kukke. But there is no hard & fast rule.

Tips to consider before visiting Kukke Subramanya Temple

Best time to visit: From September to March, during the winter, is the ideal time to visit Kukke Subramanya.

Etiquettes & Dress Code: Before entering temple, males are expected to take off their shirts and upper clothing. Although shorts are OK, dhoti and pajamas are recommended. Women should cover their shoulders and legs with salwar kameez or sarees.

Beware of monkeys: Monkeys can be found all over the complex of temples. Take good care of your belongings and don't carry food in open view.
