Exploring Ermayi Falls - All You Need To Know

04, February 2026

Ermayi Falls is a multi-layered waterfall located in the foothills of the Ballalarayana Durga range of western ghats in Dakshina Kannada. It's a seasonal waterfall that reaches its height during the monsoon season. It is one of the lesser-known waterfalls in Karnataka and among the best places to visit near Chikmagalur.

Thick foam-like water pours down the rocky landscape from 75 feet, forming a pool at the bottom. The pool is about 5 feet deep, and you can end the day with a swim or a dip in the water. However, avoid straying too close to waterfalls during the monsoon season, as the water level rises with strong currents.

Apart from that, if you are an adventurer, then you may climb up to different levels of Ermai Falls. Usually, you'll see a few of them sitting behind waterfalls, taking fantastic photos by climbing to the middle layer. But be cautious and watch every step you take because the rocks here are slippery and moss-covered. In fact, only climb with the advice of locals or expert trekkers because many people have lost their lives.

In addition, there are two other waterfalls near Ermayi that can be explored with the help of locals. However, avoid going into the forest alone because finding a route out is quite difficult.

This is a remote place and as per locals, gentle giants ”The Elephants” visit this place at night to drink water. As a result, you will be unable to camp near Ermayi Falls. Additionally, there are no eateries or restaurants in or around the area, so you need to bring your own food.

Ermayi Falls - Trek Route

Ermayi Falls are only 3 to 4 kilometers from Kajoor Darga(Masjid), which is on the main road. You can either hike the entire route or take a 2-kilometer bike followed by a hike to the waterfalls. As this waterfall is stuck in dense forests, it can only be approached on foot after a certain point.

Once you get out of the vehicle, ask the locals for directions because there are no signs to guide you. To reach Ermai Falls, trekking trails include crossing a few streams, walking beside several private farms, and walking parallel to streams in the jungle for 1.5 kilometers. If you come here during the monsoon season, when the water flow is high, you can cross the river using footbridges made of areca nut wood. Even though you can hear the sound of water flowing down from a distance, waterfalls are only visible when you reach the ideal point.

To reach here, go to Uijre, then to Mundaje, and take the diversion to Didupe village. After 6 kilometers, you will reach the place where you can take the path to Ermayi Falls, just before the Kajoor Dargah, on which four-wheelers can travel for around a kilometer. One has to cross the Ermai stream after that and resort to trekking to cover the remaining stretch of about 1.5 km to reach the destination. During the summer, one can cross the stream on foot, but during the rainy season, one has to walk on a footbridge built of areca nut tree wood. Best Time to Visit:

Ermayi Falls, a hidden jewel buried in the lush surroundings of Karnataka, is a compelling location for nature lovers and adventurers alike. To properly experience the beauty and peacefulness of Ermayi Falls, plan your visit accordingly. The greatest time to visit Ermayi Falls is during the monsoon season, which runs from June to September. This time period sees a considerable increase in water flow, changing the falls into a breathtaking sight with a tremendous cascade and vivid surroundings. During this time, the lush greenery and neighboring woodlands are at their peak, making for an incredible backdrop for photographs and exploration.

If you want a quieter experience with less water flow, visit during the post-monsoon season, which runs from October to November. The weather is good, and the surroundings remain lush and green. It's an ideal time for individuals who prefer trekking and exploring without the intensity of monsoon rains.

Avoid going during the summer months, March to May, because the water levels in the falls are lower and the heat can make the hike less pleasurable. Similarly, during the winter months, from December to February, the weather can be colder, but the falls may be less dramatic due to decreased water flow.
