The ancient glory of the historic Nalanda is revived as an international institution!

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated the new Nalanda University campus in Raigir, Bihar. The inauguration ceremony was held on June 19, 2024. On this auspicious occasion, PM Modi has even planted a sampling of "Bodhi Tree", as an act of symbolizing Buddhist heritage and Indian spirituality.

The new campus of Nalanda University(NU) is located in Rajgir, in proximity to the site of the ancient ruins of Nalanda in Bihar. The university was established by "The Nalanda University Act, 2010", an act of the Parliament of India for the reconstitution of the ancient Nalanda University as a modern international institution of higher learning.

The History of Nalanda University

The ancient ruins of Nalanda, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, have a glorious history dating back to 427 CE. Operating during the period from 427 CE to the 13th Century, the Nalanda, a renowned Buddhist Mahavihara, a great monastery, that have played a crucial role in promoting art and academics during the period of the 5th & 6th centuries.

The Nalanda was established during the era of the Gupta Empire and was supported by the Javanese and Indian patrons, which included the Buddhists and non-Buddhists. It even had a renowned library that comprised the Sanskrit text, which played an important role in the development of Mahayana and Vajrayana. The Nalanda Mahavihara is located in the city of Rajgir(Formerly Rajagriha) in Bihar.

The Nalanda continues to thrive during the period of the Pala Empire. It was after the fall of the Pala Empire, during the year of 1193, when Nalanda was raided and destroyed by Muhammad Bakhtiyar Khalji, a Turko-Afghan military general.

Nalanda's legacy persisted through centuries, inspiring educational pursuits worldwide. In the 19th century, scholars began advocating for its revival. The idea gained momentum in the early 21st century, culminating in the establishment of a new Nalanda University. In 2010, the Indian government passed the Nalanda University Act, and by 2014, a temporary campus was inaugurated in Rajgir, Bihar. This modern institution aims to recapture the spirit of ancient Nalanda, focusing on interdisciplinary research and global collaboration.

The Modern Nalanda University Bihar

Located close to the old ruins of Nalanda, the Modern Nalanda University was the pure destination, that opened doors to the history of Nalanda.

As mentioned above, Nalanda University was established by the Act of Parliament of India. And, this idea was put-forward by the 11th President of India, A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, during the post-independence period on 28 March 2006, and the bill was passed in 2007 in Bihar Legislative Assembly. The first academics of modern Nalanda University were started on September 1, 2014, with a total of 15 students.

The university became one of the flagship projects of the Government of India and is designated as the "Institution of National Importance". Along with the temporary faculty in the Rajgir city of Bihar, a new campus spanning 400 acres of land, was inaugurated by PM Narendra Modi on 19, June 2024.

As mentioned above, the campus of Nalanda University was inaugurated by Prime Minister, Narendra Modi on June 19, 2024. Arvind Panagariya is the current Chancellor and Abhay Kumar Singh is the Vice-Chancellor of Nalanda University in Bihar.

The new campus of Nalanda University will span 455 acres, that showcase the design and architectural elements that are inspired by the ancient Nalanda Mahavihara monasteries and buildings. The university also comprises a 100-acre water body, by the name Kamal Sagar Ponds, and 100 acres of green cover.

The New Nalanda University is also renowned for being a "Net Zero Green Campus". The construction of the New Nalanda University was started in 2017 and the building was completed by the year of 2020.

By road, Nalanda district is about 12km from the Rajgir. The nearest railway from Nalanda University Rajgir is Gaya Junction Railway Station(60km), and Patna Junction Railway Station(109 km).
