"There is something unique in this soil, which despite many obstacles has always remained the abode of great souls", said Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel about India.

He was the first home minister and deputy prime minister of the country. A freedom fighter who adhered to Gandhian principles of satyagraha. The hands of this powerful man helped shaped the unification of the princely states of India many, many years ago. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel is hence termed one of the founding fathers and, most importantly, the Iron man of India'.

To acknowledge the leadership and spirit of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, a colossal statue named 'the statue of unity' was made in Narmada district, Gujarat, in the Kevadiya Colony. This Indian politician had his roots in Nadiad, Gujarat, and hence is popularly regarded as the son of Gujarat. The Statue was inaugurated in the year 2018, dated 31st of October, which happened to be the 143rd birthday anniversary of Patel.

The Statue is acclaimed to be the World's tallest Statue with a height of 182 meters, designed by the Padma Bhushan award winner Ram. V. Sutar and constructed by Larsen & Turbo. Made of bronze cladding and steel framing with reinforcement of both brass and concrete coating, this statute has caught the eyes of the world in marvel!

Now that you are aware of this enormous Statue, let us go through some of the interesting facts related to the Statue of Unity:

Strength of the Statue

For any structure, structural integrity is of utmost importance. And a statue build to acknowledge the contributions of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the Iron man of India, should be having the merit of the same. Reports state that the statute of unity is so made to resist adverse weather conditions – including earthquakes and drastic wind storms.

The color of the Statue

Oxidation shall slowly change the color of the Statue of unity from bronze to green. So if you are planning to visit the place some 40 years from now, it won't be of the same hue!

Travel all they up using lifts

Two high-speed lifts with an average passenger capacity of twenty-six heads can take you up to the bosom of the Statue, giving you the entire view of the Sardar Sarovar dam as well as the mountain ranges of Vindhyachal and Satpura, within a matter of seconds.

Designation of zones

The Statue of unity comprises of different zones, with the first zone planning to accommodate a garden and museum. The zone division goes up to the head of the Statue. However, the head and shoulders are inaccessible to the visitors. But the third zone in the chest of the statue has a viewing gallery and can host nearly two hundred people.

Highly appreciable inputs

The project was announced in 2010, construction started in 2013, and finally, it was inaugurated in 2018. All these working years, there has been significant input investment of three thousand workers and engineers, along with a requirement of about 130 tonnes of iron which was locally sourced. The bronze cladding was, however, made by a Chinese company called JTQ.

So that was some pointers on the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel statue, the world's tallest statue. Now, what about the cost of such a gigantic structure? According to the Economic Times of India, the Statue of unity costs about Rs. 2 989 crores. Mind-boggling, is it?
