Who is Kaal Bhairav?

Kaal Bhairav is believed to be one of the 8 avatars of Mahadev Shiva.

According to Shiva Puran, it is said that the powerful deity have originated from Shiva's hair strand. Once Lord Brahma, the god of creation and part of the Hindu Trimurthi, alongside MahaVishnu, the god of Preserverence and Shiva, the god of Destruction had ordered Mahavishnu to bow down to him as he was the creator of all.

Back then Brahma had 5 heads, and as a result all his heads can do the works of even MahaVishnu. However the other four heads were at disagreement, as they could fathom the need for MahaVishnu in the cosmic balance. However the 5th Head didn't budge and was adamant on his opinion.

In other stories, as the argument was heated up a divine pillar of light which ran infinitely into the cosmos, both Brahma and Vishnu then decided whoever can find the origin of this light will be worshipped. Vishnu took the form of a boar and Brahma took the form of a swan. No matter how far they travelled, they could not find the source. Thus in the end, brahma's fifth head lied he found the source and clearly he's the winner. While Mahavishnu was about to accept this, Shiva appeared in his mighty form and told Brahma has clearly lied.

Mahadev, then threw a small strand of hair from his jada and from it came Kaal Bhairav.

The fearsome deity then cutoff Brahma's evil head and thus the cosmic scales went back to the truth.

Shiva then went onto curse Brahma, that for the lie he said, he will not be worshipped widely unlike Shiva and Vishnu. That's why you can only see a few brahma temples in India.

Also called as Kotwal or Kshetrapalak ie, Temple guardian. He is known to guard all the Shakti Pithas of Goddess Parvati.
