Brahma Temples in India

24, December 2025

When it comes to Hindu temples, shrines dedicated to Lord Vishnu, Lord Shiva, and Shakti are widespread.

However, temples dedicated to Lord Brahma, the Creator of the universe and one of the Trimurthy according to Hindu beliefs, are rare.

Why isn’t Lord Brahma as widely worshipped as other gods?

Unlike Shiva and Vishnu, who continue to maintain and destroy the universe, Brahma's role as the Creator is believed to be complete.

According to the various versions within the complex nexus of Hindu mythology, there are a few reasons why Brahma dev is not worshipped widely, however the prominent one is the story of Kaal Bhairav.

There was once a heated argument between Brahma and Vishnu as who was superior. Back then Brahma had 5 heads and the fifth head was arrogant, who always said Vishnu should bow to him as he was the creator.

Suddenly a cosmic pillar of fire and divine energy appeared near them and they decided whoever can first find the source of the pillar would be the winner. Brahma took the form of a swan and Vishnu took the form of a boar both went in search of the source.

Both of them failed, but Brahma lied he had indeed found the source, suddenly the Mahadev manifested from the pillar, created Kaal Bhairav and punished Brahma by cutting off his arrogant head and cursing that he would not be worshipped like the other two heads of Trimurthy.

One legend states that Brahma was cursed by either Lord Shiva or Goddess Saraswati, preventing him from being widely worshipped.

Another story suggests that since Brahma became infatuated with his own creation, he lost favour among devotees.

Some believe that his worship was more prominent in ancient times but declined over the centuries.

Yet, there are a few remarkable Brahma temples across India that hold immense spiritual and historical significance. Let’s explore some of the most notable ones.
